The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of family resilience on depression and suicide ideation of the elderly. The study subjects were 188 upper 65 elderly. We collected data used the self-administered questionnaire. We used the Walsh(1998)`s family resilience model to measure family resilience variable. For this study, the t-test, ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis were conducted. IBM SPSS Statistics 20.0 was used. First, the score of the family trust system is higher than other components of family resilience. Second, as results of the differences of family resilience by respondents` general characteristics, gender, age, education level, marriage type, family type, health status, house type, economic status, economic activity showed statistical significance(p<0.05, p<0.01). Third, as results of the differences of depression by respondents` general characteristics, gender, age, education level, marriage type, family type, health status, economic status, economic activity showed statistical significance(p<0.05, p<0.01). Fourth, as results of the differences of suicide ideation by respondents` general characteristics, gender, age, education level, marriage type, family type, health status, economic status, economic activity showed statistical significance(p<0.05, p<0.01). Fifth, the result of correlation analysis, family resilience have a negative relationship with depression and suicide ideation. Sixth, as the result of the multiple regression analysis, we found that family resilience reduced elderly depression and suicide ideation. Especially, the family resource and communication is effective factor to reduce depression and suicide ideation. As we can see from the above results, we emphasize more family resilience on the academic and elderly policy perspective to improve mental health of the elderly.
